Point-to-point communication, a time-tested model in the field of telecommunications, remains a vital mode of transmitting information across vast distances with reliability and precision. In the context of satellite communication and video links, point-to-point systems provide a dedicated, secure channel between two fixed endpoints, ensuring high-quality and uninterrupted communication - a necessity in today's fast-paced, globalised world.

Alaris Kuhne is a renowned German manufacturer specialising in high-frequency and microwave technology for over 30 years. Their products play a crucial role in facilitating point-to-point communication systems by enhancing signal strength, quality, and reliability across various applications.

Alaris Kuhne's amplifiers are utilised in various point-to-point communication scenarios, including:

  • Satellite Communication: Enhancing uplink and downlink signals between ground stations and satellites.
  • Video Links: Facilitating live video transmissions by ensuring high-quality signal integrity.
  • Wireless Data Transmission: Supporting reliable data links in industrial and research settings.

Before we continue, let’s have a look at what point-to-point communication is.

In a broadcast scenario signals are transmitted to multiple receivers, and point-to-point systems ensure that communication is strictly between the sender and the intended recipient. This model is widely used in government communications, private corporate networks, international data services, and military operations, where security and reliability are paramount.

In satellite communication, point-to-point links are established between two Earth stations via an orbiting satellite. This system functions through two main components: the uplink, where data is transmitted from the originating station to the satellite, and the downlink, where the satellite sends the data to the destination station.

Similarly, point-to-point communication plays a significant role in video links, particularly in live broadcasting, video conferencing, and surveillance. For example, during a live news event, a video feed is transmitted directly from the camera crew at the location to the broadcast studio via satellite or fibre-optic connection. These links are established using IP-based video encoders and decoders, microwave transmission equipment, or dedicated fibre optic lines, ensuring minimal delay and high-definition video quality.

The benefits of point-to-point communication in both satellite and video applications are substantial. These include high levels of privacy, as only the intended recipient receives the transmission; reliability and consistency in signal quality; and control over bandwidth usage. It also provides a dedicated line free from external traffic, making it ideal for mission-critical operations where delays or disruptions can have significant consequences.

As mentioned, Alaris Kuhne has nearly three decades worth of experience in creating products to enhance quality and signal strength. Below we elaborate on some of their products being manufactured.

Power Amplifiers: a range of power amplifiers designed to boost signal strength in point-to-point links. For instance, the KU PA BB 005090 – 6 A operates between 50 to 900 MHz, providing a gain of 30 dB and an output power of 8 W, typical. This amplifier is suitable for applications requiring robust signal transmission over considerable distances in VHF/UHF applications.

Recently Alaris Kuhne has introduced new linear power amplifiers designed to enhance signal strength in various applications. Notably are the below:

  • KU PA 440500 - 25 B: Operating between 4400 to 5000 MHz, this amplifier delivers a minimum output power of 25 W (CW) with a typical gain of 46 dB. It's engineered for high linearity, making it suitable for digital transmission systems in C-band such as DVB. Features include adjustable Automatic Level Control (ALC), over-temperature protection, and reverse polarity protection.
  • Under development is a linearized 4400 to 5000 MHz power amplifier originating form Alaris Kuhne´s LIN PA line to improve linearity, efficiency and output power further.

·        KU PA 190250 - 80 LIN: This LDMOS power amplifier covers frequencies from 1900 to 2500 MHz and provides 10 W COFDM linear output using a unique lineariser technology. It's tailored for applications requiring robust and linear amplification across S-band.

Low Noise Converters (LNCs): To enhance weak incoming signals, Alaris Kuhne's KU LNC 2027 C PRO 2 covers the 2 to 2.7 GHz range, offering a gain of 33 dB with a noise figure of 1.0 dB typically. This LNC is ideal to convert signals for digital broadcast systems and other communication platforms.

For space-born signals the KU LNC 8085 C PRO 2 is the ideal down converter to receive X-band signals with a coverage from 8 to 8.5 GHz and a noise figure of 0.8 dB and up to 50 dB of gain.

These additions reflect Alaris Kuhne's commitment to advancing RF and microwave technology, offering solutions that cater to the evolving needs of industries such as telecommunications, broadcasting, and defence.

In conclusion, while newer communication models like multicast and broadcast have their place, point-to-point communication continues to serve an essential function, particularly where precision, security, and reliability are non-negotiable.
